I read an article recently that highlighted some of the digital age excludes generation X/Y (me) from that baby boomers (like my parents) spent all that extra time they had what with the lack of computers, cable, and dvr. Along with lending an album with the risk of not actually getting it back (sorry, not mourning that one) and quality time with those little booklets that come in records/cassettes/cds (I actually do remember doing that in middle school), was the art of the mix tape. Apparently this was a lot more work than I've ever imagined, what with trying to get the timing right for starting and stopping, not being able to skip songs, and other inconveniences. While as a Midwesterner I certainly agree that the unearned is generally unappreciated (a sentiment I most frequently express regarding weather), I humbly offer the playlist as my generation's response to the mixtape. Here's a bit of my playlist for today, with links for the interested.
I would also like to point out that some people (like, people who remember things like lunar landings or Michael Jackson when he liked the way he was or who might have lost some vinyl in the great flood of the last century) do not seem to believe that any music of note is currently being released (or really has been in more or less my lifetime). I am including release dates to underscore my disagreement with this viewpoint. Nowadays you just have to look a little harder for it as the radios not much of a friend, but sometimes that work just makes finding a good song that much better, you know?
i'm a little confused... so it was talking about people making mixtapes before they spent all their time with computers and things, right?
ReplyDeleteif so, i totally made mixtapes as really cool birthday presents for my friends in elementary school, complete with narration and explanations between songs, and a decorated, personalized cover. maybe i was that ahead of my time. or just had a really sweet tape deck. either way, it did take forever.
